Gravel Dollhouse Rooftop Tutorial

Since some dollhouses out there have flat rooftops, I thought this might be a very good way to cover them. I tried it once and it really was worth the work.

WARNING: THIS CAN BE MESSY!

You will need:

-Cardboard (or wood, whatever you feel like using to cover the already existing rooftop)
-Black paint (acrylic)
-a “regular” paintbrush
-a sponge brush (not sure they are called that though…)
-white glue (it doesn’t have to be tacky glue, cheap school glue works fine)
-sealant (gloss sealer) or any other kind of gloss you feel comfortable working with, but a sealant is the best.
-poppy seeds
-old newspaper or place mat to work on that is flexible

STEP #1
First of all, cut a piece of cardboard or wood the size of the rooftop or the part of it which needs to be covered. I prefer doing that on another piece rather than directly on the “original” rooftop.
Once that step is done, paint it with the black paint and regular paintbrush.

Wait for the paint to dry before getting to STEP #2

STEP #2
Once the paint has dried, randomly drop white glue on the surface and then spread it everywhere with a sponge brush. Those are not very expensive is hardware stores; I paid mine 27 cents.

STEP #3
Spread the poppy seeds all over the glued surface. Remove the excess by taking the “roof” and place it vertically on your flexible work surface. Put the puppy seeds which have fallen off into a bowl or something and if there are places that don’t have poppy seeds and it is bothering you, just use those back on the roof.

STEP #4
Once that part is done, let everything dry. It should look like that. On mine there are places where there are no seeds, but since the dollhouse I am making is supposed to look a bit work, it works for my project perfectly. :)

PICTURE #5
You might need that, by the way… I know I did, lol

You should clean the sponge brush before it dries.

STEP #6
a) Time for the gloss! This is the brand I used but any brand should work. I prefer to use a sealant instead of a regular gloss/varnish because it does not only keep the seeds from falling off the project, but also it makes it easier to clean later on and the paint won’t come off either.
b) With the sponge brush, delicately pat the sealant onto the poppy seeds. You don’t want to make a “painting” movement because it might take off the seeds you have so carefully applied.
c) It might look “foamy” and white, but that will disappear when it has dried completely.

Let that dry and once it is done, you can glue that to the actual rooftop of your dollhouse! :D
